Smarties, we’re super excited to introduce you to our newest Smarty partners and brand new to Charlotte, Queen City Childcare! Finding the right sitter for your family can be a daunting task yet it’s one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make for your family.
Queen City Childcare recognized a need for on-demand babysitting for one-time and short-term gigs. The whole idea is for parents to be able to find an available sitter without having to post online (no thanks, NextDoor peeps!), interview sitters, and then hope the sitter they like is available when they need her. It’s perfect for parents who don’t have a regular sitter, are new to town, are only visiting, or whose regular nanny or sitter is unavailable.
We sat down with the founder of Queen City Childcare, Sarah VanderWood, to tell us everything about her brilliant new biz!
I was born and raised here in Charlotte. I graduated from East Meck, then attended the University of South Carolina. Afterward, I went to law school at Pepperdine University in Malibu and practiced law in Washington, D.C. for a few years before briefly moving back to Los Angeles. I just recently moved back to Charlotte so I could finally put down roots somewhere.
I’ve always been a babysitter, and it’s a great side gig to have. There’s also a huge demand for it. However, there have been many periods in my life where I had extra time and could have used some extra income, but it was difficult to connect with parents. I also wasn’t looking for a regularly-scheduled job, which constituted the majority of posts on sites like care.com. At the same time, I knew there were tons of parents out there desperate for a high-quality sitter, but I’ve found that parents similarly struggle with connecting with sitters. Also, it’s one thing to spend significant amounts of time and money searching for a nanny, but it’s quite another investing all those resources to find a sitter just for one evening or for infrequent occasions. I created Queen City Childcare to help make everyone’s lives easier: parents get fabulous childcare with no hassle, and sitters get jobs that suit their schedules.
How does the process work?
I have interviewed, background-checked, and reference-checked nearly 20 (and counting) local sitters ages 18 and up. All are experienced and CPR-certified. When a parent needs a sitter, all they have to do is go on the website, fill out their information (number of kids, ages, date and time they need childcare, etc.), and pay a $25 booking fee. I then alert all my sitters about the job opportunity, and it’s given to the first sitter who indicates she wants it. At that point, I send the sitter all the details, and I send the parents a bio and photo of the sitter. Once the babysitting job is completed, the parents pay the sitter directly in cash or online payment. Prices are listed here.
Smarties, we hope you connect with Queen City Childcare soon – perfect timing for your Valentine’s Day date night:-)
